THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE
The Safari Experience at Tambarare Camp
Wow-factor wildlife is what this luxury safari camp in Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy is all about. You get a sense of this on the drive from the airstrip when grazing rhinos are among the first things you see as you approach the gate of Ol Pejeta. Once you arrive and the friendly staff greet you with a eucalyptus-scented face cloth, your shoulders drop and you immediately settle into this sublime safari setting. Known for its welcoming, family feel, Tambarare Camp is the most colorful A&K Sanctuary, with vibrant splashes of purple, green and blue on walls and soft furnishings. Sip coffee on your private deck at sunrise, and more than likely catch the first animal sightings of the day, as elephants and giraffes gather at the waterhole near camp (it’s a popular drinking spot in every season). Conservation is top of mind when visiting Ol Pejeta, and you can play your part by helping rangers to monitor the lion population; it’s also possible to see how effective the anti-poaching dog unit is at hunting down a target. Afterwards, it’s an easy drive back to camp for a delicious lunch of crunchy salads plucked from the vegetable garden, followed by salmon carpaccio, before further activities such as guided bush walks to appreciate the smaller details of this epic landscape or visiting the local community to learn about the conservancy’s work in education and enterprise first hand. After sundowners in the bush, head back to camp for a dinner of succulent beef supplied by Ol Pejeta farmers (you’ll see cattle grazing near iconic African wildlife due to the conservancy’s land management work), and round off an action-packed day with a nightcap in the open-plan lounge.

Kenya’s Laikipia region has the richest wildlife diversity in the country outside the Maasai Mara. The 90,000-acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy – on the dramatic Laikipia Plateau, reached in about five hours from Nairobi – is home to Africa’s most iconic species, and has become an award-winning model on how the most vulnerable of these can be protected. Ol Pejeta’s history with this species goes back to 2009, when it was chosen to receive the last four northern white rhinos in the hope that its wild landscape might encourage reproduction. Now the protected rhino sanctuary that houses Najin and Fatu is also home to the largest black rhino population in Kenya.
Ol Pejeta began life as a cattle ranch in the 1940s, and these roots are reflected in its unique livestock integration model, where wild animals survive and thrive in their natural habitats alongside farmers tending herds. You can even taste Ol Pejeta’s fully grass-fed beef on the menu at Tambarare Camp. As well as being a haven for endangered species, its plains harbor the Big Five and more than 500 bird species. But Ol Pejeta doesn’t rest on its laurels when it comes to its conservation success; its innovative steps include using technology to monitor species populations (you get to witness this on a thrilling lion tracking experience) and smart fencing to allow the free movement of migratory animals, for example incorporating wildlife corridors to ensure elephants can move around the greater ecosystem.
