THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE
The Safari Experience at Stanley’s Camp
Shortly after landing at Stanley’s Airstrip and catching a breath at the tented welcome center, you get a taster of what this sublimely located camp is all about. The 25-minute transfer to camp is a short game drive across the plains, and the first opportunity to spot the diverse wildlife for which this corner of Botswana is known. The next morning, the whoops and calls of the bush waking up accompany morning coffee in your airy tented suite, before your guide comes to take you on your first full-scale game drive. Listen out for other sounds – lions calling; elephants trumpeting – as you traverse the delta plains in a 4x4, driving around towering termite mounds that could be hiding skulking leopards. Lunch is a bush picnic of meze-style dishes to share, or is enjoyed back at your luxury tented Okavango Delta camp, before you indulge in downtime; lounging by the pool (perhaps as impalas and zebras walk past); reading up on the local flora and fauna in the Explorer’s Lounge, or browsing the curated selection of African-crafted items in the on-site Bush Boutique – from colorful clothing to chic jewelry. There are fascinating walking safaris in the Botswana private concession in which Stanley’s Camp is based to spot the smaller details and creatures of the bush – from native grasses to dung beetles; seasonal mokoro excursions to glide past blooming lilies and fluttering butterflies; and scenic helicopter flights for those keen to see the delta in all its patchworked glory from different angles. Sundowners here come with a twist, served on a mokoro trip or by the hippo pool near camp. Although there’s no bad spot for sunset as the tented suites and the main area are angled to maximize views of the mesmerizing sinking sun; and the circular bar is the perfect place for a brilliantly mixed cocktail. Three-course dinners are a delicious showcase of local flavours and once a week the chefs’ barbecue skills are put to the test, with sumptuous, sizzling results. More extraordinary sights and sounds await on night drives – bush pigs, aardvarks, scavenging hyenas, servals and perhaps even a rare pangolin, accompanied by the hoots of a wide-eyed owl echoing through the darkness. And when the sky is clear, guides will take the roof off the 4x4 for sublime stargazing.

The soaring main area – comprising a large and lofty, tented Explorer’s Lounge and dining space, plus an outdoor bar – affords magnificent views over the Okavango Delta floodplain in front of the camp, where big game regularly marches past. All of these elements have been designed to foster an unrivalled connection with nature to place guests at one with the wild.
Shaped like a horseshoe, the camp encompasses the tented suites on one side and the striking infinity pool on the other, in full sight of any passing animals – because there’s no greater joy than slipping into the water after a busy day out exploring the delta. Seclusion and total immersion in the natural surroundings are what this place is all about; the camp isn’t fenced so a guide will come to pick you up from your tented suite in the morning and walk you home at night – the wildlife spotting really is 24/7.
Yet being so secluded does not mean sacrificing any creature comforts, far from it. Throughout the camp safari-chic materials such as linen, leather and timber are used in a contemporary way to create a quietly luxurious sanctuary. High-thread-count linens, generously stocked minibars and double vanities in the spacious ensuite bathrooms come as standard. Incredible biodiversity in the Okavango Delta
The enduringly dramatic delta floodplain
This luxury camp in the southern Okavango Delta is situated on a 260,000-acre private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. This is a prime spot in the UNESCO-listed delta, a unique and uniquely beautiful wetland habitat – the largest inland delta on earth, in the midst of the Kalahari. It is fed by the mighty Okavango River, which flows from the mountains of Angola almost 1,000 miles to the west. The grassy plains flood seasonally and between May and September are transformed into a 15,000-square-kilometre patchwork of winding waterways, lagoons and tiny islands, teeming with wildlife – elephants, lions and resident and migratory birds in particular.
Stanley’s Camp is an oasis within this oasis, where low-impact luxury meets grand-scale wilderness. The property itself offers a neverending parade of wildlife; dips in the infinity pool deliver sightings of wildebeest, hyena, impala, zebra and other animals at the nearby watering hole. As it’s in the southern Okavango Delta, the camp benefits from the seasonal flooding in the area, with the water slowly dispersing over the flat terrain. This makes it the perfect location to enjoy peaceful excursions by mokoro when the water levels rise to create shallow channels (by contrast, the northern delta, which is fed directly by the Okavango River, features permanent swamps and deep channels). It’s also a hotspot for birding and keen photographers will enjoy the play of light on the water.
A pioneer of conservation-driven tourism in Botswana, Moremi Game Reserve was the first wildlife sanctuary created by the Batawana people, who historically hunted in the area, and it continues to be protected by the local community. The reserve offers excellent game viewing year-round, and is home to many endangered species such as cheetah, African wild dog and black and white rhino. Because Stanley’s Camp is on private land bordering the southern section of the game reserve – in a diverse landscape of riverine forest and sprawling open floodplain – walking safaris and night drives in search of nocturnal animals are allowed here, so an already unforgettable safari experience is dialled up even more.
