The Safari Experience at Okahirongo Elephant Lodge
This luxury desert lodge in the remote Namibian wilderness is unique because animals are not the headline act. That’s not to say there’s no wildlife at all – Kaokoland is home to desert-adapted species of rarely spotted elephant and lion, as well as more common giraffes, which have evolved to survive without permanent water in one of the most arid landscapes on earth. With no fences and its egg-shaped, Himba-inspired central dome, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is designed to seamlessly blend into its extraordinary surroundings, and the low-impact structure is fully solar-powered, with all water (including the swimming pool) coming from an underground borehole. A heartfelt welcome sung by a choir of Himba staff is the ultimate ice breaker, setting the tone for the famously warm service that’s a contrast to the beautifully barren desert location. A day of exploring starts after an early breakfast at your luxury Kaokoland lodge, before you set out to marvel at the lunarlike geology: riverbeds that were carved into canyons thousands of years ago; towering clay castles sculpted by wind and sand. Lunch is a picnic in the canyon before returning to the lodge in the early afternoon (a dip in the infinity pool beckons), perhaps seeing leggy ostriches and swooping starlings along the way. The guides are expert at pointing out animal prints and markings in the sand – evidence of those unique desert-adapted creatures. The Bush Boutique stocking African crafts can be perused on a leisurely break from the Namibian sun, or simply kick back in the lounge and take in the panoramic views. E-biking excursions and visits to a local Himba village let guests experience desert life from other angles, while pre-dinner drinks in the dunes signal wind-down time. Three-course dinners served in the breeze-cooled dining area might include organic pan-seared oryx followed by moreish scoops of gelato. Sunset in this corner of Namibia is around 9pm, so the team at the lodge offers guests unique desert nightcaps at this magical hour. Architecturally arresting desert lodge
Okahirongo Elephant Lodge may be truly off the beaten track, but its remoteness has been no obstacle to inspired design. The colors and textures echo the landscape, while the dramatic dome at its center is styled like a signature Himba home. Interiors are pared-back, pale and tactile. Lots of timber in organic tree-trunk-like forms edge bone-white walls softened by fabrics in pops of colour: dusky terracotta, sage green, sunburst yellow. All the better to seamlessly mirror the views – flat ochre desert, rocky peaks, strolling giraffes, springbok and ostrich – which are mesmerizing, particularly from the exquisite infinity pool.
There are just seven suites and one two-bedroom suite – the only buildings with doors in this luxury desert lodge in one of Namibia’s most remote corners. The rest, including the convivial dining room, comfortable lounges and driftwood-topped pergola, are open-sided and positioned to frame different aspects of the awe-inspiring terrain beyond. The on-site Bush Boutique showcases local artistry in an array of distinctive styles, stocking the likes of sandals, shoes, baskets, Himba perfume, clothing, sunglasses, bracelets, backpacks, necklaces, hats and much more besides. As well as its strong commitment to community (many of the staff grew up in the nearby village), the lodge makes commendable eco efforts to minimise its impact on this delicately balanced landscape; water is supplied from an underground borehole and solar energy powers the electricity supply. And you can rest assured that Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is malaria-free.
The setting, on the banks of the Hoarusib Riverbed, is the perfect base for adventures out into it – enjoy scenic drives in the desert with local guides, explore the region’s phenomenal clay castles, track down the enigmatic Lone Men of Kaokoland sculptures scattered across the landscape, sip sundowners as the sun sets over the dunes. As the fires are lit each evening, take some time to gaze up and admire the expanse of constellations – you’ll be struck by just how few people have had the privilege of sitting beneath this particular patch of inky sky. Its banks are lined with flourishing plants in places (bursts of green in an otherwise earthy landscape dominated by red sand and rocky outcrops), attracting hungry and thirsty wildlife. By carving its way into the mountains, the river has created striking cliffs as well as the iconic clay castles that make for wow-factor moments on the twice-daily scenic drives. There are also stone statues near the lodge, which are part of the enigmatic, life-size Lone Men of Kaokoland sculptures.
